Free Medical Screening for TCRP Clients

Four young medical students and a Medical Practitioner in private practice recently joined hands to provide free medical screening at Dibashram, for 17 men from The Cuff Road Project.

The four friends, Amelina, Aditya, Charles and Neng Wei, all students of NUS Medical School, spoke of how they were inspired to contribute after reading about the plight of migrant workers in Singapore. They were fortunate to meet Dr Balkis, a private practitioner with long experience who shared their motivations and readily offered to volunteer her time and advice.

With Dr Balkis in the hot seat, our four friends successfully organised the free medical screening on Monday 26 September 2011. Over the course of some two hours, from 6.30 to 8.30pm, 17 pre-registered men from the CRP food programme were interviewed, examined and given advice. Interpretation between English and Bengali was provided by two volunteers, Shagar and Abdul Rashid, as well as our Dibashram Manager, Mohsin.

Seeing a number of cases of back pain caused by the hard work the men do, Neng Wei took the opportunity to offer advice, complete with diagrams and Bengali translation, on how to take care of one’s back.
